Refurbishment of Bridge 42

GGP Consult is proud to have been appointed by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) to assist with the refurbishment of Bridge 42—an important structure carrying the railway across the Esk Valley and enabling services to and from Whitby.
The refurbishment of the 180-year-old Grade II listed structure, is essential not only to maintain safe and reliable operations, but also to preserve the historic fabric of one of the UK’s most significant heritage railways.
GGP Consult has been engaged to undertake detailed surveys, inspections, and refurbishment design to enable the bridge's reopening to rail traffic. This has included design of temporary propping foundations, constructed by CML and assiting with the design of the arch propping by MabeyHire.
As an award-winning consultancy, GGP has extensive experience delivering sensitive interventions within heritage rail environments, with multiple projects recognised at the National Railway Heritage Awards. A recent refurbishment of Filey Station, —designed by George Townsend Andrews—was highly commended at the ICE Yorkshire and Humber Awards, reflecting our understanding of structures and stations with heritage similar to those on the NYMR. The station is almost identical to NYMR’s flagship station at Pickering, which GT Andrews also designed.
