Sand Silos, Bathgate Quarry

Client

Lindrick Construction/Bathgate Silica Sand

Project Overview

Steel and concrete calculations, plus full detailed fabrication drawings for 4no sand silos, support structure and foundations.

01

The Challenge

The client required 4no 375tn out loading sand silos for their site in Sandbach. Our role was initially to undertake calculations, general arrangement drawings, and full fabrication drawings for the silos and the support structure, as well as check an existing structure for additional load from a new conveyor. The client additionally appointed us for foundation design, and liaising with groundwork contractors to engineer the best solution for this site.

02

The Solution

GGP used in house engineers and detailers to undertake relevant silo, steelwork, and reinforced concrete design. All of this was done to current Eurocode guidance. Detailing was done in a combination of Solidworks for the silos, Tekla for the steel detailing, and Autocad for the concrete foundations.

Through liaising with both piling and ground improvement contractors, a solution of vibro stone column installation was adopted to provide a ground bearing pressure adequate for a single concrete pad foundation.

03

The Result

GGP delivered fabrication drawings, calculations, reinforcement drawings, and general consultation in a timely and effective manner. The client managed to install the foundations, support steel, and silos in late 2024 – all with minimum complications and on an agree timescale.
