The engineers were given the title to celebrate their efforts to quantifiably reduce carbon emissions. The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Carbon Champions initiative honours decarbonisation efforts from across the civil engineering community. It provides recognition for project owners as well as best practice insights and expertise for the wider industry.

“Civil engineering is in the unique position of being at the forefront of efforts to transform and improve the world we live in,” said Lara Young, chair of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Carbon Champions review panel. It is exciting to be able to celebrate them and their efforts – and hopefully, inspire others to do the same.”

The Statera Energy BESS Portfolio consists of several 50MW battery energy storage assets throughout the UK. Statera Energy, along with design partners GGP Consult decided to investigate alternative solutions to an existing carbon-heavy design. The team undertook an extensive geotechnical exercise and developed a foundation design that reduced the volume of concrete required, improving its carbon footprint. The design is also easier to build and replicate elsewhere.

Listed for GGP Consult are Jon Lee and Jeremy Collins
